With friends — Paris

A Korean meal with friends almost always works, for one plain reason: the food is built to sit in the middle of the table. You order two or three dishes for everyone, add more as you go, and nobody has to commit to a single plate of their own. Table barbecue takes that format to its end — someone turns the meat, someone builds the ssam wraps, the conversation carries on around it. Fried chicken with beer, tteokbokki and savoury pancakes do the same job with less ceremony. The Paris addresses gathered here can hold that shape: tables big enough, a menu that divides, a kitchen that keeps up. Cross with Korean barbecue, fried chicken or drinks depending on the mood, and with late-night if the evening is likely to run long. One sensible caveat: the rooms that suit four or five friends are often loud, and several of them take no reservations — arrive early or plan to wait.
